February 20 marks the start of what is a busy year for German electoral politics, with seven of the total 16 partially autonomous states (Lander) going to the polls. The results will determine which parties hold power in regional governments, and also the representation of the Bundesrat, Germany’s powerful upper house of the federal parliament.
