Russian Politics: Even More of the Same?

  • While Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s decision to run for president was expected, the fallout between President Dmitri Medvedev, Putin and Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin was more public than anticipated, highlighting some of the stresses in Russian policy circles that could make it more difficult to respond to heightened global risks.
  • Uncertainty over domestic macroeconomic policy will add to external pressures on Russia, which include weaker prices and demand for oil and gas, and more costly financing for the Russian government, banks and corporations.
