Seeking Answers on Oil Market Volatility

Following the 2008 spike in the price of crude, oil market speculators were widely blamed for accentuating price volatility through their trading practices. Now the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the U.S. regulatory authority charged with monitoring oil futures, is trying to shine some light on the situation. In its recently released Commitment of Traders report (CoT), the CFTC has broken the kinds of traders it tracks into much more granular categories, hoping this step will clarify the degree to which speculators drive the price of oil.
