Background:
EU opened entry talks with Turkey in 2005, but there has been little progress. So far, Turkey has begun work on 11 of the 35 chapters, or policy areas, necessary to satisfy EU accession requirements. French President Sarkozy and German Chancellor Merkel are both opposed to Turkey's EU bid and public opinion in many EU countries is less than welcome. At the same time, there is growing disillusionment in Turkey towards joining the bloc, particularly among the young.
