Background:
Nuclear power has been touted as a potential source of clean energy—a means of producing electricity without exacerbating climate change. Proponents also say nuclear energy, which requires substantial up-front investment costs in nuclear generators, will become more economically competitive if the prices of coal and natural gas rise in the future. Thus far, however, doubts remain about nuclear energy’s economic competitiveness and political viability. Skeptics add that nuclear power is no quick fix to climate change, given the limited share of electricity production it can be expected to account for even if the industry follows a heady growth trajectory, which is no sure thing. Nuclear power also raises hackles both from a domestic security and international geostrategic perspective, given the dangerous implications of accidents at nuclear plants and the fact that the same technologies used in nuclear energy plants can be used to make nuclear weapons.
