Argentina: Key Sectors

Critical Issues

Background:

The possible discovery of oil in Britain's "South Atlantic Ocean Territories" has revived a centuries-old dispute with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, ruled by Britain since 1833 and claimed as Islas Malvinas by Argentina. In 1982, the two famously fought a short-lived but violent war over the islands, which were briefly taken by Argentina and then retaken by a British expeditionary force. The war resulted in hundreds of deaths on both sides, as well as the losses of major surface warships and dozens of warplanes. Efforts to mediate the dispute since then have come to no resolution.
