United States-Iran Relations

Critical Issues

Background:

President Obama campaigned heavily on his desire to meaningfully engage Iran on a range of issues, eschewing the more hawkish positions that include the threat of military force proffered by his predecessor, George W. Bush. Iran is now under sanctions imposed by the UN and the 'Iran Six' (U.S., Russia, China, France, Britain, and Germany) since it reportedly has roughly enough low-enriched uranium to make a single atom bomb, and has refused to renounce its nuclear ambitions.
