Critical Issues
Background:
After six rate cuts in 2009, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) may be nearing the end of its easing cycle. Throughout 2009 the CBE has maintained a policy of a steady series of rate cuts, beginning with a 100 basis point (bps) cut on February 12, 2009. This policy has narrowed the difference in deposit and lending rates and brought the benchmark interest rate down to the lowest it has been in at least three years. In its September 2009 meeting, the CBE reduced its benchmark interest rate for the sixth time in 2009 to its lowest level since 2006.
