Brazil Central Bank Still Won’t Budge

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Brazil’s central bank delayed the beginning of the tightening cycle, likely to April, while Argentina’s consumer confidence continued to deteriorate on the back of high inflation, political crisis and institutional deterioration. Chile posted solid economic growth and a high current account surplus at the end of 2009. Nonetheless, the central bank kept the monetary policy rate unchanged at 0.5%, opting to remain on hold at least until Q2 2010 to allow time for post-earthquake economic recovery.
