South Africa: Domestic Politics

Critical Issues

Background:

South Africa is a federal parliamentary representative democratic republic. Jacob Zuma assumed the presidency in May 2009 after winning 66% of the vote. He is the fourth president elected in multi-party democratic elections, and his party, the African National Congress (ANC), has been in power since the end of apartheid in 1991. The party is part of a formal alliance with the Congress of the South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the South African Communist Party. The alliance provides a strong support base, but has led to diverging priorities for the ANC in recent years. The two main opposition parties are the Democratic Alliance and Congress of the People; however, neither has enough support to field a strong contender for the presidency.
