MENA: Development Challenges

Background:

Despite the region’s persistent development and growth, Middle East and North Africa (MENA) continues to face numerous challenges, which threaten its future prosperity. With 360 million people, the region is not uniform and different risks prevail in the economies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and other MENA countries. However, a range of issues is relevant across the region, which requires a coordinated approach and commitment to ensure sustainable growth. The risks of water scarcity, energy supply and infrastructure investment deficit could potentially impede economic progress. Education, labor adjustments and trade liberalization have also been identified as factors, which could boost competitiveness and strengthen the economies.
