The African Union (AU)

Critical Issues

Background:

The African Union (AU) is an intergovernmental union consisting of 53 African member states which has mounted peacekeeping missions and sought to promote stability and good governance. Founded out of the ashes of its Cold War predecessor, the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the African Union has proven more effective but continues to be hamstrung by a lack of resources, political disputes and differing agendas of member states.
