Background:
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international organization that promotes international monetary cooperation and provides services to central banks and other international organizations. Its stated purpose is to make monetary policy among its 55 members more predictable, stable, and transparent. More specifically, the BIS regulates capital adequacy by requiring its central bank members to have a capital/asset ratio above a set minimum, and encourages the transparency of reserve requirements. The head office is based in Basel, Switzerland, with representative offices in Hong Kong and Mexico City.
