Background:

Ukraine has been gripped by political turmoil since the 2004 Orange Revolution that brought President Viktor Yushchenko to power and steered Ukraine towards the West and possible NATO membership. Former allies, the Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko and President Yushchenko are now at the center of an intractable political row, compounded by the economic crisis and the upcoming January 2010 presidential elections. Ukraine's tense relationship with Russia over gas payments and its pro-Western policy course add to the political disputes in the country that has been divided between pro-Russian and pro-Western camps.
