Critical Issues

Background:

Taiwan's export-based economy depends on stable, open world trade, making it vulnerable to fluctuations in the global economy. Both external demand for exports and domestic demand for imports contracted sharply in Q4 2008, staying slow through 2009. Electronics are Taiwan's most important industrial export, and the sector is the largest recipient of U.S. investment, making it particularly susceptible to the U.S. slowdown and sluggish recovery. With China, Hong Kong, Japan and the U.S. accounting for 58% of Taiwan's exports, the pace of their recoveries will to some extent dictate that of Taiwan's.
