Critical Issues
Background:
The Greek government is headed by the socialist party, Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), which won a comfortable majority at the October 4, 2009 snap elections. Initially pledging to boost public spending and increase wages to revive growth, PASOK's leader, George Papandreou, has since attempted to tackle the spiraling budget deficit. The government pursued a softer foreign policy course than its predecessors, mending ties with Turkey and Macedonia and pushing for a breakthrough in the Cyprus-reunification talks that were launched in 2008.
