Critical Issues
Background:
Israel's system of proportional representation empowers an array of political parties spanning left to right, including groups representing various strains of Judaism, Israeli Arabs, secular socialist and nationalist groups. As such, its legislature, the Knesset, often produces political marriages of convenience as the country's three largest groupings, Labor on the left, Likud on the right, and the upstart Kadima in the center, jockey for the support of smaller parties and a majority in parliament. The current coalition of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is described as a Likud government, yet Likud's historic rivals in Labor back the government and won several key ministerial seats for its leaders in exchange.
