Background:

Since the 1979 Revolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran has operated under a Constitution defining a complex separation of powers nominally designed to preserve and advance the goals of the Islamic Revolution.  In reality, the domestic politics of Iran represent a welter of competing influences and centers of power. Although recent electoral unrest suggests that the ground may be shifting under the establishment, those in power will not yield easily, adding to domestic violence and complicating the global response to Iran’s nuclear program.
