Background:

As the developing world is struggling to deal with high food prices in the wake of the global financial crisis, the long-term challenges of climate change, water deficits, land degradation keep food supply issues in the spotlight.  As the world grapples with food shortages, countries are looking at genetically modified crops, outsourcing farming, bio-engineering, improved seeds and fertilizers, bilateral agricultural treaties in a bid to increase food supply. Some countries, particularly in the arid but financially rich Arabian penninsula are investing in agribusiness abroad and contractin land in the effort to secure food supplies.
