Background:

Jose Alberto Mujica, a former left-wing guerrilla member, won Uruguay's presidential elections on November 29, 2009. Mujica, of the ruling center-left Frente Amplio (FA) coalition, defeated former President Luis Alberto Lacalle (1990-1995) of the center-right Partido Nacional (PN) with over 50% of the vote. Notably, Mujica has chosen former Finance Minister Danilo Astori (2005-2008), suggesting economic continuity and easing concerns raised by the PN that Mujica would radically change economic policy. Astori is credited with the sound economic management that allowed Uruguay to recover from the 2002 banking crisis, as well as helping to navigate the current global economic crisis.
