Background:

Until the end of the 1990s, the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) had almost nothing in terms of banking systems and financial activity, meaning that most of the region’s wealth was invested outside of the country. However, the desire to manage the influx of money from the region’s petroleum and natural gas reserves has lead to the creation of stock exchanges, commercial and investment banks and financial products (such as the sukuk, a Shariah-compliant bond) aimed at developing the region’s financial sectors.
