Argentina Outlook: Something’s Gotta Give

A brightened outlook for the global economy has led us to revise up slightly our forecast for Argentina; still, the sharp deceleration underway suggests growth will fall short of the historical average. Fiscal spending, the main engine of growth, seems to be under stress. Unsustainable expenditure levels already have led the government to relax some subsidies, which may fuel inflation. Achieving short-term goals may create long-term problems, as the use of central bank reserves for debt payments will leave Argentina more vulnerable to international shocks.
