Australia Outlook: The Dual Economy

While the mining sector booms, the rest of the economy plods along, weighed down by both external and domestic factors, including a strong Aussie dollar, falling housing prices at home and deteriorating consumer sentiment. Higher commodity prices will feed into headline and eventually core inflation this year, but underlying demand weakness will keep a lid on price increases over the next two years. Mounting evidence of slowing economic growth coupled with a fairly benign inflation environment will coax the central bank into cutting rates at least once in Q2 2012.
