Brazil Outlook: On an Upswing

Growth should be reaching a trough, but economic activity won’t pick up until H2 2012 and will remain bound by a relatively low output potential. The central bank (BCB) will continue an aggressive easing cycle, selling its discourse of lower neutral rates. However, it may find itself between a rock and a hard place as inflation expectations fail to converge to target. Currency intervention will again feature prominently on policy makers’ agendas. However, lower interest rate differentials, anemic growth and government intervention will balance downside pressures on BRL from strong capital flows.
