Canada Outlook: Deleveraging Ahead

Fiscal contraction is setting in and external vulnerabilities remain, but better global prospects and improving business confidence and credit-driven consumer demand imply only mildly below trend growth in 2012 and 2013. Consumer deleveraging could begin as early as H2 next year and pose a major risk to the economy, beginning in 2013. The Bank of Canada (BoC) will likely sit tight until Q4 2013 at the current level of monetary accommodation, supported by its credible inflation-fighting history, while fiscal consolidation continues.
