China Outlook: Calling the Bottom (for Now)

Although Q1 GDP growth matched our forecast, we are revising up our near-term outlook. Credit growth was much stronger than anticipated in March, and investors are starting to move back into the property market in anticipation of further monetary easing. This will pull forward the rebound we had been expecting by a couple of months and thus boost the 2012 growth rate slightly. Nevertheless, the recovery will be muted as residential real estate investment (7.7% of GDP) will continue to decelerate for most of 2012. The upside risk to our forecast is limited, while the downside risk remains significant. We still expect the People’s Bank of China to cut interest rates by the end of Q2, but it’s a close call, and failure to deliver could spark another decline in property prices, transactions and investment.
