Egypt Outlook: It’s All About the Politics

Political transition will shape Egypt’s economic outlook during the forecast period, with greater stability required for the revival of tourism and investment. Burdened with a sizeable deficit and growing debt, the government has little space for stimulus, leaving it reliant on foreign support to help meet financing needs. Domestic confidence has picked up in 2012, and should see private consumption remain the main growth driver, though wages remain under pressure from high inflation. High oil prices will continue to put pressure on the current account and foreign exchange reserves, while the central bank will push for gradual depreciation.
