Egypt Outlook: Transition of Power Is Key to Recovery

Continued strikes and protests will keep the Egyptian economy well below trend, with exports unable to provide much of an offset and little space available for the government to stimulate and meet economic demands. Foreign and domestic investors will be wary of the political transition due to take place in H1 2012 and will wait for signs of how the military plans to hand power to a civilian government. External financing will become a necessity as pressures on the currency and assets rise; meanwhile, tighter monetary policy will continue to prevent dollarization and capital flight.
