Greece Outlook: Immediate Disaster Thwarted, Growth Prospects Still Grim

We expect the contraction in Greece’s GDP to deepen in 2012 as joblessness peaks and investment drags on growth, before easing in 2013. Further austerity and structural reforms will continue to undermine domestic demand over the next two years, though we are highly skeptical of the degree of structural reform that the government will actually succeed in implementing. We expect that the government, faced with a choice between a decade of austerity and recession or a eurozone (EZ) exit to regain competitiveness, will choose the latter, most likely as early as late 2013.
