Hungary Outlook: A Milder Recession

The stronger outlook for the core eurozone (EZ) economies and tentative signs of improvement in Hungary’s PMI and confidence indicators signal a softer recession than we had anticipated. Political hiccups will push the introduction of the new EU/IMF loan program to the end of Q2 2012, with a risk of more delays if favorable external market dynamics continue. Calmer financial markets and the central bank’s liquidity measures have prompted a revision of our monetary policy call: We now expect the 7.0% policy rate to stay on hold until Q4.
