Hungary Outlook: Sinking Into Recession

A sharp slowdown in external demand will exacerbate the effects of fiscal austerity measures and tight financial conditions, pushing Hungary back into recession in 2012. Deteriorating growth and the higher cost of funding will test the government’s ability to meet the budget deficit target of 2.5% of GDP in 2012 and shore up investors’ confidence in the wake of the country’s rating downgrade to junk. Hungary’s central bank (MNB) will continue to raise its main policy rate in the coming months to ease financing risks while waiting for the new IMF safety net to be put in place.
