Indonesia Outlook: From Risk to Reality Check

In keeping with recent history, the Indonesia government was forced to back down from its pledge to cut fuel subsidies at the last minute, a key risk we highlighted in our March Outlook. Inflation will fall well within the central bank’s target range this year, and consumption should get a boost as well, though a recent Bank Indonesia (BI) policy will slow the pace of credit growth to households, restricting upside consumption potential. The government’s budget deficit will rise to about 1.7% of GDP this year, still an enviable fiscal position, though subsidies will continue to divert much-needed public resources away from more important physical and human capital development projects.
