Ireland Outlook: Outperforming the Eurozone

Ireland will be the only eurozone (EZ) economy to expand in 2012, driven by continued export growth, despite weakening conditions in key markets. Domestic demand will drag on Irish growth as the government continues to retrench, consumer confidence remains low, owing to the negative wealth effect from the property sector crash and high unemployment, and business confidence falls in response to events elsewhere in the EZ. Ireland has decoupled from the other bailout countries and has been praised for hitting its bailout program targets, but government bond yields remain too high for Ireland to return to the markets next year. We expect Ireland will receive additional European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) funding to bridge its financing needs in 2012-13.
