Italy Outlook: Prolonged Recession Ahead

The Italian economy is now experiencing a double-dip recession. In light of the worsening domestic and global economic climate and the pending introduction of additional rounds of front-loaded fiscal austerity, we expect the recession to last for the duration of 2012 and 2013. While RGE views the introduction of a new technocratic government as a welcome development, political instability will remain prominent in the short to medium term in light of deep divisions between domestic political actors. The sensitivity of Italian debt dynamics to the deepening recession and elevated borrowing costs will see a large increase in government debt over the forecast horizon, which will likely force Italy to restructure its sovereign debt by late 2013.
