Japan Outlook: Slow and Steady

Public and private investment will be the key growth drivers this year, while the trade balance continues to suffer from a dependency on imported energy. A hardening of political stances limits the likelihood of an agreement this year on raising the consumption tax, although the risk of a sustained rise in Japanese bond yields remains distant. Another extension of the Bank of Japan’s (BoJ) asset-purchase program is likely to come in H2 2012, with upside risks for exporters if the yen weakens further and labor productivity growth recovers.
