Japan Outlook: Baby, It's Cold Outside

A chilling external environment and weak domestic private-sector growth drivers will undermine Japan’s fragile postquake recovery, though public-sector spending will provide a much-needed boost to growth in 2012. Coupled with a persistently strong yen, private- and external-sector fundamentals will conspire to keep Japanese prices mired in deflation for the next two years. Japan’s passive, prudent savers will continue to support new public debt issuance, and the Bank of Japan (BoJ) will also serve as a ready buyer of Japanese government bonds (JGBs), shielding the country from a home-grown sovereign debt crisis.
