Geostrategic & Long Term Issues

RGE's Q1 2010 Outlook

Kuwait: As the oil sector and regional liquidity recovers, Kuwait’s economy will pick up in 2010; a reduction of hydrocarbon output and reduced consumption caused real GDP to fall by around 1.5% in 2009. Despite vulnerabilities (including weak corporate balance sheets), the improvement in oil demand and state support for the financial sector helped to stabilize the economy.

Read the Q1 2010 Kuwait Outlook.

Qatar: Qatar’s economy, which outperformed the rest of the GCC in 2009 and grew at one of the fastest paces globally (over 8%), should further accelerate to the low double digits in 2010. As was the case in 2009, increased natural gas output and government spending will be the main growth drivers.

Read the Q1 2010 Qatar Outlook.

Bahrain: Bahrain’s economic growth slowed to around 2.6% in 2009 due to lower capital inflows and reduced exports. RGE expects higher oil prices, government expenditure and private investment to boost liquidity and lead to a modest growth revival in 2010.

Read the Q1 2010 Bahrain Outlook.

Oman: Oman has been relatively resilient in 2009, growing an estimated 3.7%, in part because it was not bound by OPEC restrictions and has fewer global linkages than its GCC neighbours. Higher government spending, private consumption and a revival of foreign direct investment should support a moderate acceleration of growth in 2010.
