Malaysia Outlook: Mostly Clear Skies, With a Chance of Rain

Domestic demand will buoy the economy as external demand remains subdued, though new Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) policies will clamp down on debt-financed consumption spending. With elections around the corner, the government will keep subsidies firmly in place, supporting consumption spending at the expense of the fiscal deficit. Despite a recent easing of price pressures, upside risks to inflation, along with economic resilience, are likely to convince BNM to stay on hold for the rest of 2012.
