RGE's Q1 2010 Nordics Outlook

Nordic economies, with the exception of Iceland, will return to growth in 2010. All five Nordic economies contracted in 2009, though at very different rates, as the region is not a homogeneous bloc. Ultimately their economic recovery hinges on a sustained global upturn. As RGE expects a U-shaped economic recovery in the advanced world, external demand will remain relatively weak. Differences in domestic demand will thus be important in determining growth in 2010, with Sweden and Norway standing out positively in this regard.  All Nordics except Iceland were in a favourable fiscal position to cushion their contractions, but quarterly public consumption growth in Norway was by far the largest during the first three quarters of 2009. By contrast, Iceland’s constrained public finances forced the government there to cut spending in 2009. In 2010, fiscal policy will be less expansionary in the Nordics.
