Norway Outlook: Braving the Currents
We revise upwards our growth forecast for the Norwegian mainland (excluding oil, gas and shipping) economy, as the Nordic commodity exporter has once again proved its resilience by maintaining growth at close to trend, despite the eurozone turmoil. Domestic demand is the growth driver and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Business confidence has held up due to the booming oil sector, despite traditional manufacturers experiencing weakness in external demand and competitiveness. It will be a close call, but given stronger-than-expected recent Norwegian macro data and RGE’s updated eurozone outlook, we expect no further rate cuts by Norges Bank this year.
