Pakistan Outlook Update: Politics Trump the Economy

Worsening conflict and strained foreign relations will keep growth, investment and public finances weak, increasing dependence on foreign assistance, particularly from the U.S. and the IMF, which will come at the cost of sovereignty and unpopular fiscal reforms. Supportive exports, remittances and FX reserves will contain current account risks despite falling FDI. Waning government popularity and bickering between coalition parties will slow tax reforms, delaying IMF loan disbursements. The U.S.-Pakistan alliance will endure despite fractures, given Pakistan’s funding needs and the United States’ goal to attain regional stability.
