Romania Outlook Update: Nascent Recovery at Risk

The worsening outlook for the global economy will undermine Romania’s shaky recovery after emerging from two consecutive years of recession. A bleaker industrial outlook, tight credit conditions and fiscal austerity measures will dampen the nascent consumption recovery in the coming months. On the bright side, the government’s renewed efforts to improve absorption of EU structural funds will offset IMF-mandated fiscal tightening and provide a boost to investment.
