Spain Outlook: Sharp, Multiyear Recession Ahead

RGE expects the Spanish economy to experience a sharp recession in 2012 and 2013, given the ongoing deleveraging of the public and private sectors and weakening demand for Spanish exports. The outlook for private consumption remains strongly negative given the dire labor market prospects, painful fiscal austerity measures and tight credit conditions. The new center-right government has boosted market confidence by swiftly announcing an austerity package and structural reforms. Recent policy action, in particular the ECB’s liquidity measures, has bought Spain additional time to put its public finances back on a sustainable footing. However, without an adequate firewall, Spain will remain highly vulnerable to a reversal in market confidence.
