Sub-Saharan Africa Outlook: Another Strong Year in the Cards

A stronger global outlook will buoy growth in Sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) frontier markets, and assuage the incipient currency crises in East Africa. Oil exporters will outperform, with Southern Africa continuing to lag. Domestic consumption should remain the key driver of economic activity, supported by government spending, but still high inflation will keep consumer spending subdued. Fiscal policy will be less expansionary, but spending cuts are unlikely due to persistent political pressures. Inflation seems to have peaked, but at a high level, leaving little space for rate cuts.
