Sub-Saharan Africa Outlook: Shifting Into a Lower Gear

The global slowdown will dampen external demand, affecting Africa’s export revenues, terms of trade and fiscal accounts. Domestic consumption should remain the main force behind economic activity, supported by government spending, but the region will not be immune from the downturn. Persistent inflation eliminates the possibility of monetary easing, and aggressive hikes across many frontier markets will exacerbate the slowing of domestic demand.
