Taiwan Outlook: Strait Jacket

A recession in the eurozone and a sharp growth deceleration in China will severely impact Taiwan’s high-beta economy in 2012. Political risk will remain elevated at least through January, when the opposition could retake the presidency and reverse course on cross-strait economic integration. Monetary policy looks set to ease somewhat in the next two quarters, while there is enough fiscal space to offer a modest stimulus after the growth slowdown becomes more apparent.
