Thailand Outlook: The Economy Gains Traction

Following a severe contraction in Q4, Thailand is in the midst of a solid rebound that should bring growth back to trend by the end of the year. Given Thailand’s high oil sensitivity and the introduction of a new national minimum wage this year, inflation risks are tilted to the upside, though the central bank won’t tighten policy before Q3. The government is likely to overrun its budget deficit this fiscal year, and with political instability a latent risk, Thailand remains vulnerable to bouts of capital flight and rising government bond yields.
