Thailand Outlook: The Dark Before the Dawn

Sequential growth will rebound sharply in H1 2012 as flood-related production disruptions clear. Nonetheless, a hostile global environment will restrain the rebound heading into H2. The Bank of Thailand (BoT) will ease once more in H1 2012 but retain a prudently hawkish stance the rest of the year as the government’s spending programs stimulate domestic growth. The proposed FY2012 budget allocates a growing share of total spending to public investment, though revenue and GDP growth will likely undershoot the government’s estimates, leading to a budget shortfall of close to 4.0% of GDP.
