United States Outlook: Sticking to Our Story

Our views on U.S. growth in 2012 remain broadly unchanged from our February Outlook. Labor market data have remained positive, while some key data have continued to show weakness. With financial conditions still benign, the probability of a recession appears to be materially lower (about 20%); higher gasoline prices remain the key downside risk to growth and upside risk to inflation (though the impact on inflation would be temporary). We have lowered the probability of more easing from the Fed in June but still view a sterilized mortgage-backed securities (MBS) program as more likely than not.
