United States Outlook: Don’t Dismiss That Recession Risk

Some positive momentum in U.S. growth in H2 2011 underpins a modest upward revision to our growth forecast, but elevated financial stress, fiscal drag and ongoing deleveraging in a low-income environment will pin growth well below potential. Downside risks dominate: Heavier fiscal drag and spillovers from a worsening of the eurozone (EZ) crisis on credit conditions and net worth still suggest a 50% probability of recession. Inflation will cool down, and the Fed will counter a slowdown in growth with additional balance-sheet expansion by mid-2012; any shock from the EZ will prompt a more aggressive, unconventional response.
