RGE's Q1 2010 Latin America Outlook

By the end of 2009, LatAm economies remained on a solid path to recovery as domestic confidence and external conditions improved and a low base effect started to take place.  Overall, highly accommodative domestic macroeconomic policies appeased business and consumer confidence and relieved weakness on labor dynamics. Moreover, sound banking systems, low external vulnerabilities, and solid public balance sheets allowed the region to take advantage of a rapid improvement in global growth prospects and risk appetite. Finally, although imports continue to fall faster than exports, they eased the pace of decline and in some instances they started growing at a rapid clip, while exports benefited from the global inventory cycle adjustment and relatively high commodity prices. These dynamics tend to support RGE’s view that consumption and investment will resume growth in 2010; however, net exports will likely limit a stronger performance.
